First Planet

Based on two words randomly assigned to me in a foundational graphics class, I was asked to create two 6 x 6 iterations (rendered in ink) which creatively use type and letter shapes to convey a message which these two words could represent. I worked with the words “first” and “planet,” with the latter inspiring me to take on a theme of science and discovery. I sketched dozens of iterations before landing on the two that best represented the words: a version in which the “first” represented the sun, and the “planet” orbits, and a version in which “planet” represents the moon and the “first” mimicks a flag (inspired by the space race of the 1960s).
